Russia Was Announced the Movie File-Sharing Capital
According to the statistics collected by piracy monitoring company MarkMonitor, the recently released movies are most frequently shared from the Russian Federation, the US and Italy. However, per capita the results are different: in this case, the UAE is in the first place, followed by Israel and Estonia.
It’s not a secret that peer-to-peer file-sharing services are normally used to share pirated films. However, not many people know about the volume of such unauthorized transfers in different countries.
Recent information published by the piracy monitoring company detailed the impact of unauthorized P2P file-sharing on the content industry. For example, in the Netherlands alone the losses due to online piracy totaled to an estimated 78 million euros. The report also contains some interesting data which revealed geographical file-sharing differences.
During the first six months of 2014, the monitoring firm (the technology partner for the American “six-strikes” program) has been tracking several popular English language blockbuster movies – for instance, The Hobbit and The Hunger Games. The company monitors films distribution via both eDonkey and BitTorrent. The latter had the largest audience. Overall, the popular movies were shared over 150 million times without permission.
Although the report was focused on English language movies, most of the pirated copies (over 20 million) were shared from the Russian Federation. The bar chart above shows the top 10, and as you can see, the US, Italy, Brazil and Spain completed the top five. The results were no surprise for industry observers, but the most interesting part was the number of file-sharers per capita.
For instance, in the US, 12.5 million pirated copies were shared by 4% of population. In Russia this number is 15%, but in Australia it’s even more – over 16%. It turned out that the movies in the sample were most shared in the UAE, Israel, Estonia, Greece and Italy.
Apparently, the report is based on a sample that is biased towards Western content, and therefore you can’t see Chinese downloaders in the list, as they tend to share files via other channels. In addition, the results don’t cover direct downloads and streaming services that may be relatively more popular in other regions.
