A Radnor township businessman faces child porn charges after thousands of images and videos of children engaged in sex acts were allegedly found on his computer, according to District Attorney Jack Whelan.

John Francis Steele, 68, of the 200 block of Sproul Road in Villanova, becomes the latest individual nabbed by the Delaware County Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.

John Francis Steele is facing multiple offenses, including 25 counts each of possession of child pornography and criminal use of a communication facility, and one count of dissemination of child pornography, all felonies of the third degree.

His arrest on Tuesday capped an investigation by county detectives that began back in October 2014 into the Internet sharing of child pornography on the BitTorrent network, according to the charging document, penned by county Detective Kenneth Bellis. A suspicious host computer was later traced, via the Internet Protocol address to Steele, the document states.

Whelan said an analysis of Steele’s computer located over 2,000 videos and images that depict children engaged in sexual acts. Many of the images in violation were organized by category in separate folders on his computer. In addition to the images in violation, there were over 80,000 images found on his computer that are currently undetermined as to whether they meet the legal definition of child pornography.

Steele was arrested as a result of an investigation conducted by Det. Kenneth Bellis of the District Attorney’s Criminal Investigation Division (CID) Pennsylvania Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force with assistance from Radnor Township Police.

Following a preliminary arraignment, Steele was released after posting 10 percent of $50,000 bail. Conditions of bail include no contact with minors and no Internet use the exception of work and communications with his defense attorneys. He is also required to undergo a psycho-sexual evaluation.

“At this time we are working with our client to comply with the court’s order to be evaluated. We will review the Commonwealth’s evidence before making any decisions about how to handle the case going forward,” said Steven M.Pacillio, who was retained as defense counsel along with Robert Ferrara.

County detectives and Radnor police served a search warrant at the Sproul Road address on Jan. 28, 2014.

Pacillio said his client’s wife died about the same time the child-porn investigation commenced.

According to Pacillio, Steele is semi-retired, but continues to work in commercial real estate.
