A suspect is on the run after diving head-first into a moving car to escape US police.

The daring escapee was pulled over by police under suspicion of driving a stolen car on Sunday night in Nebraska.

The suspect had his hands in the air and was walking back towards a Douglas County Sheriff's deputy before being told to stop and get down on one knee.

The suspect complies but appears to be looking around for an escape.

Moments later a second car drives past slowly, and the driver slows down to ask, "What's going on here?"

The police officer yells back: "Stop! Park in front of that car!"

With the police officer's attention diverted, the alleged car thief makes a dash for the passing car's passenger window, diving in head first.

With the man's legs flailing out the window, the car then speeds off down the road and out of sight.

Both men are reportedly still on the run.

The daring escape almost eclipses that of Michael Maldonado, a US prisoner that made a last-second dash from a police car and under a closing garage door to escape a county jail.

Maldonado was captured the next day, but not before video of his escape went viral, with many online cheering on his dramatic getaway.
