President Michael D Higgins grilled over his age and failure
PRESIDENT Michael D Higgins came under fire over his age and for failing to address the Government on homelessness in a fiery election debate today.
Transparency surrounding the finances of the Aras also dominated the early stages of the first debate attended by all six candidates.
Presidential candidates Peter Casey, Gavin Duffy, Joan Freeman, President Michael D Higgins, Sean Gallagher and Liadh Ni Riada
The incumbent was quizzed by hopefuls about the “extravagance attached to the office” including staying in a €3,000 per night hotel in Switzerland.
Sinn Fein’s Liadh Ni Riada described the President’s €249,000 salary as “exorbitant” and blasted Michael D for failing to publish detailed financial breakdowns of his spending in office.
The President defended the Aras expenses and said he would kick start an annual audit report for the office if he is re-elected.
However, businessman Peter Casey slammed Michael D as “totally disingenuous” and declared: “We don’t have to wait until you are elected to see how much money you are wasting in the Aras.”

Casey also quizzed the President on what he spends his wages on seeing as his “accomodation, transport and even dog grooming” is paid.
The former Dragon’s Den star turned up the heat on the incumbent again later in the debate when he stated Ireland needs a President with more energy.
He said: “People need to be aware the number of appearances have gone down 42 per cent since year one.
“If he keeps going at the same trajectory we’ll be getting a walk around the park in seven years’ time.”

Casey was referring to an Irish Sun investigation published earlier this year that revealed the number of engagements published in the President’s diary has plummeted his first year in office.
Casey went on to say “it’s not his fault he’s 77 years old” before declaring the Presidency deserves someone that’s got a lot of energy.
Sean Gallagher then chimed in as the good cop and blasted his former Dragon’s Den co-star for being disrespectful.
Sinn Fein candidate, Liadh Ni Riada, also hit out at Michael D for failing to address the Houses of the Oireachtas on issues such as homelessness and said Palestine would be the first place she would visit if she won.
Michael D Higgins defended himself by stating that a President’s speech to the Houses of the Oireachtas must be approved by the Government.
The President was again criticised for his tribute to controversial Cuban leader Fidel Castro who he described as a “giant among men”.
Sean Gallagher blasted the President’s tribute as “unwise” with Michael D confessing he would reword the statement if he had the chance but that he did not regret it.
Gavin Duffy, the third Dragon’s Den star in the race, told the debate he has suspended his business while he runs for the Aras.
Pieta House founder Joan Freeman told the debate with her charity which she has saved 30,000 suicidal people.
