Perth man paralysed in crash in Japan trying to get home for treatment
A Perth man, who was left paralysed after a drift-racing accident, are struggling to raise the funds needed to bring him home for medical treatment.
Danny Westwood, 25, was doing a warm-up lap during a drifting festival in Ebisu, Fukushima on November 7, when is car careened out of control and rolled over, trapping him inside, reports nine.com.au.
Westwood's mother, Karen Triffett, reportedly told nine.com.au that her son had suffered a broken neck, vertebrae and damaged his spinal cord.
The accident has left Westwood in a Tokyo hospital for the past few weeks.
The 25-year-old mechanic had travel insurance but it did not cover car accidents.
Westwood’s family and friends have started up a GoFundMe page to raise money to bring him home, which could cost in the region of $80,000.
“Danny’s mother Karen is working tirelessly at home to ensure we can have him home ASAP while Danny’s father Peter remains at his side in Japan, Danny’s girlfriend Shay is also by his side keeping his spirits high,” the page says.
“While doctors currently do not believe he will regain use of his legs anyone who knows Danny knows that this prognosis won’t stop him from working his absolute hardest to make a full recovery.
“Danny remains in Japan until the full funds to cover his medical bills and transfer home can be raised so we appreciate all efforts to get Danny’s story out there as we want him home as soon as possible.”
The page reads that Westwood was “living every young guy’s Tokyo drift fantasy”.
Ms Triffett told nine.com.au that her son is “just so positive”. “That’s our Danny,” she said.
