Passport Office website CRASHES after warning millions
THE Passport Office website CRASHED yesterday after millions of Brits were warned they risked a No Deal travel ban across EU countries unless they made today's deadline.
Travellers with less than 15 months left on their passport rushed to apply for a new document after a warning by consumer group Which? sparked a surge in applications.
They warned that those with less than 15 months left on their passports could be at risk if they plan to travel after March 29 in a No Deal Brexit scenario.
But Brits racing to the website found the disappointing message: "This service is not available. If you don’t want to wait you can apply a different way."
Rory Boland, editor of Which? Travel, said: "After months of patchy and confusing information about passports from the Government, this late rush in the weeks before Brexit was entirely foreseeable – which makes it even more shocking that people have been let down by an IT glitch."
The website problem lasted most of the day until the Home Office announced at around 4pm that the "technical issue" was resolved.
Brits poked fun at the abysmal service, after the official Twitter account yesterday announced they were "back and raring to go" as the website crashed.
Earlier this year, the government issued advice that EU countries could bar Brits from entering if there is a No Deal Brexit.
The UK Foreign Office warned: "If the UK leaves the European Union with no deal, the passport validity rules for travel to most countries in Europe will change from 29 March 2019.
"Some passports with up to 15 months' validity remaining may not be valid for travel."
This is because when passports are renewed, up to nine months of validity from the old passports are carried over.
However, in a No Deal situation, the time carried over will no longer be valid.
Countries popular with British tourists like France, Spain and Portugal could all be affected.
This could lead to a rush in passport applications in the UK following previous advice that just six months' validity would be needed.
Passport renewal can take up to three weeks to arrive, although it can be much longer during busy periods
Brits travelling immediately after Brexit in March, for example, may need to have a passport which is valid until at least June 2020.
