Over 100 Criminals Using Stolen Credit Cards Arrested in Airports
Europol arrested 118 people at 84 airports all over the globe in the frameworks of its global investigation into plane tickets bought with stolen or fake credit card details. The Europol’s European Cyber Crime Centre confirmed that lots of the criminals were linked to other forms of crime: for example, robbery, shoplifting, illegal immigration or drug smuggling.
The operation was carried out by 49 law enforcement agencies across the globe, many banks, 64 airlines and the International Air Transport Association, while Europol coordinated all actions in order to share intelligence on fraudulent transactions. As for non-European destinations, those were covered by Interpol in Singapore and Ameripol in Bogota.
The police were waiting for the passengers at 84 global airports and traced people who had used stolen credit card numbers to pay for their flights. Europol admitted that it detected 281 suspicious transactions. The law enforcement claimed that the operation was another proof that they have ‘upgraded’ the ability to work smoothless together all over the world, cooperating with law enforcement and private parties to prevent and fight cybercrime, including identity theft and credit card fraud.
Although the police wouldn’t disclose the total value of the fraud, they admitted that the operation targeted the highest profile cases. The Europol’s European Cyber Crime Centre explained that the criminals could easily obtain stolen credit card data from a number of different online blackmarkets: for example, the peers of rescator.cc, kaddafi.hk, octavian.su and cheapdumps.org offer a lot of stolen credit card details at any time, most of which is usually stolen by the hackers.
The earlier media reports said that Rescator was known to hold much of the information stolen from the American retail giant Target a year ago, as this was confirmed by some security experts. If you check the prices on the website, you can still find the offers for details of a single credit card from the United Kingdom selling for less than $20. The service also sells credit card details of numerous big name banks, including HSBC, RBS and Nationwide.
In the meantime, the security experts point out that the today’s criminals are extremely organized and are able to find and abuse stolen card details very quickly. They may test the card details by carrying out a small transaction or even making a tiny donation to charity to check if it works. If it does, the criminals can make as many purchases as possible until the card is maxed or stopped.
