A RAIL company sparked outrage by routinely swiping ten per cent of cash from lost wallets before handing them back.

Lost property managers at Arriva Trains Wales were forced to back down on the "outrageous" policy when a passenger complained after being forced to forfeit over £10 to get his money back.

Adam Howells, 28, hit out at the charge after shelling out £10.86 - dubbing it "theft by train".

He blasted on Twitter : "So my lost wallet was found by @arrivaTW and they charge me £2 to release it, then take 10 per cent of the cash that was in the wallet!"

Other charges included £25 for a laptop and £10 for mobile phones.

Bosses even slapped charges on watches, cycle helmets, and WALKING STICKS.

The delay-hit firm has been forced to change its lost property rules after an outcry on social media.

It insisted the charges were in place because the lost property office "takes up a lot of resources".

A spokesman said: "Our customers' feedback is really important to us, and following recent feedback on this issue, we will now be changing our policy with immediate effect.

"In this instance we are happy to refund the percentage that was charged to the customer who brought this to our attention.

"We are happy to begin the process of reviewing the lost property policy with customer groups and rail industry regulatory bodies."
