A customer who torments waiters and waitresses as part of a 'tipping game' has sparked outrage after sharing his 'cruel' restaurant antics online.

The anonymous American man shared his humiliating methods to show people how to get 'the best service of your life' while dining out.

But the way he taunts low paid restaurant staff with dollar bills has provoked an angry backlash.

He explained that he would place five $1 bills on the table for the server to see as they take his order.

'Don't say anything to them,' he wrote. 'If they mess up, you take a dollar away and so on. At the end of the dinner, however much is left, is their tip.'

The customer would take money away and put it back to show the server how he or she was performing.

He revealed that when he was dining out with his wife he took away one of the notes after the waitress forgot to bring bread for the table.

But when she noticed that a dollar bill was missing she brought him extra bread later without being asked, so he put the money back on the counter.

'Haha all in all a great evening with my love and a good dinner experiment we both wanted to see play out. Try it, you will be surprised!' he wrote.

The tweet amassed more than 700 comments and thousands of shares from angry social media users.

Anchorman Greg Screws replied: 'It reminds one of that thing about "all you need to know about someone is how they treat a waiter. What a jerk.'

Sandra Rankin said: 'That’s pretty disgusting behavior to be honest, who are to display such crass behavior. If you want to leave a tip then do so, or don’t.... but to flaunt your cash in this way is just awful. You are taken advantage of poorly paid employees.'

'Why do some people treat servers like they are training an animal? If they do good then you give them a treat, if they mess up you rub their nose in it. Smh,' Twitter user Brent said.

Another irate user wrote: 'They are doing their job, they aren't dancing monkeys for your entertainment.'

One user said: 'That's a pro-level dedication to douchebaggery.'

Michael Wayne commented: 'What a weird new way to be cheap and rude simultaneously.'
