The dramatic end to a high-speed police chase in Pennsylvania has been caught on camera.

Tyler Bisson was filming from a parked vehicle, when the vehicle police were pursuing drove over a spike mat, spun out of control and ploughed into two parked cars, including the one he was in.

Online news outlets in the United States reported about a dozen vehicles were ordered to pull over to the side of the road so the police could deploy the spikes in an effort to stop the driver.

The collision didn’t badly injure Mr Bisson or his passenger, but three elderly bystanders who were also struck are believed to have been treated for serious injuries in hospital.

The video has already received more than two million views and drew questions from social media users, asking why police used spikes when the area was not clear.

Speaking to a US news organisation, Lieutenant David Hall said spike mats are deployed when an incident is rapidly unfolding.

“The spike strips does not cause someone to lose control of their vehicle; they deflate the tires very gradually so they can keep control over the vehicle,” he said.

“Him crashing was not caused by the spike strips, but was caused by him over correcting.”
