NT News wins big gongs at News Awards in Sydney

THE NT News and Sunday Territorian have taken out two gongs – including the highly revered Campaign of The Year category – at the News Awards last night in Sydney.

The Campaign of the Year was awarded to the NT News for its tireless work through the Save Our Children campaign which was triggered by the rape of a Tennant Creek girl.

Dozens of stories over more than six months led to more resources being injected into child protection, especially in Central Australia, and forced Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to visit the area and address the crisis.

The NT News, also took out the Headlines of The Year.

The winning nominations were for Ginger Megs, in relation to the royal wedding between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Why I’ve Got Some Sticky Near My Dicky in relation to the Australian cricket ball tampering scandal, and Abduckted in relation to claims by a Bakewell mum that her ducks may have been taken by aliens.

NT News editor Matt Williams said he was extremely proud of the paper’s mix of comedy when appropriate but also its determination to make the NT a better place.

“It is good to be recognised for the quirky, humorous headlines which our brand has become synonymous with but also about for our ability to shed light on important issues that matter to our community which was showcased through our Save Our Children campaign,” he said.

The Daily Telegraph journalist Sharri Markson took out the prestigious Sir Keith Murdoch Award for Excellence in Journalism.
