The growing conflict between Ukraine and Russia continues to shock public opinion, and demonstrations of support for the Ukrainian people are pouring in from all over the world. On its scale, Netflix has also just taken part in this conflict via an announcement which could penalize it more than anything else.

According to the Netflix spokesperson, the platform has decided not to submit to a Russian law which imposes certain obligations. This law requires any platform exceeding the threshold of 100,000 subscribers in Russia to have to broadcast around twenty Russian television channels. With its million subscribers in the country, Netflix is ​​therefore affected by this law, but decides to oppose it and ignore potential reprisals from the Russian regulator who could prohibit it from operating.
Given the current situation, we have no plans to add these channels to our service.

Netflix's position is far from trivial. Indeed, although the channels in question are of a diverse nature (sport, news, etc.), it turns out that the vast majority of Russian media have an editorial line that is very dependent on the government. They must therefore serve as a relay for the propaganda of the state and of Vladimir Putin, who voluntarily minimize the current offensive and settle with the truth.
