A MUM "loved her evil boyfriend too much to tell cops he was battering newborn baby to death", a court has heard.

Aeriel Spivey, 26, allegedly told cops "love takes you over and you just brush it under the rug" before her partner was charged with murdering their young child.

The accused, Dylan Daugherty, 23, has been charged with beating seven week old Brooklyn before the couple found her lying unresponsive at their home in Houston, Texas.

The infant's horrendous injuries were described to a court on Thursday, when a prosecutor said she received "blunt head trauma consisting of scalp and facial contusions", ABC reports.

Brooklyn also suffered "over 60 rib fractures", blunt head trauma on her face and scalp, skull fractures, a broken arm, broken leg, broken pelvis over three separate traumatic events.

Last June, Brooklyn's obituary read that she passed away "peacefully."

In interviews with Houston police, Spivey told them she was concerned about the bruises she saw but did nothing.

According to ABC, Aerial at one point told an officer: "I had been thinking for a few weeks he had been hurting her. Of course love takes over and you just brush it under the rug."

Spivey stayed at home looking after the baby while her husband worked, a court heard.

According to court records, Daugherty did not confess but he did defend Spivey.

"I didn't do anything," the prosecutor read from Daugherty's statement. "But claimed Aeriel was not responsible for the injuries or the death of Brooklyn."

Aeriel Spivey, 26, has been charged with injury to a child by omission, while Duaghtery is accused of felony murder.

Both remain in custody.
