A MUM jumped 330ft to her death with her son, 10, in her arms in a horrific murder-suicide “after being left homeless”.

Emergency workers were left in a state of shock when she ignored their pleas while on a bridge under construction in Colombia, say reports.

The upsetting incident took place on the La Variante Bridge in the community of Ibague in Tolima, central-western Colombia.

The woman, identified as 32-year-old Jessy Paola Moreno Cruz, was clutching her son May Ceballos while the emergency services tried to help her.

Agencies including officials from the Ministry of Health of Ibague were at the scene, reports Radio Cadenal Nacional SAS.

Seguimiento says that a doctor, psychologist, police officers and firefighters spent an hour trying to persuade her to change her mind.

The website said the child also begged his mum not to leap from the bridge.

But she ignored their pleas and jumped, killing both herself and her boy.

Firefighter Rafel Rico told reporters: “They begged her not to do it and tried to convince her to stop but sadly she took the fatal decision.”

Moreno Cruz had financial problems and had recently been evicted from her home.

She and her child were homeless as she did not have enough money for rent.

Ibague mayor Guillermo Alfonso Jaramillo told Radio Cadenal that initial investigations showed that debt collectors had been haranguing the mum.

He added: “This ends up hurting or even costing the life of the person… this lady, who was a single mother, unfortunately was desperate at the pressure of [paying back] debts.”

The mayor said similar circumstances, with people being “extorted, intimidated, blackmailed or threatened with death” was “something that is monstrous and is occurring in Colombia as a whole”.

An investigation into their deaths continues.
