Police have shot a man behind an apparent bomb threat at Brisbane International Airport.

Queensland Police and the Australian Federal Police ordered the evacuation of the Brisbane International Airport and stopped trains running to the terminal on Saturday night.

The man reportedly pulled a knife and threatened to use explosives as the Special Emergency Response Team moved in, firing non-lethal rounds.

Just as police revoked a declaration under the Public Safety and Preservation Act for the airport, they issued a new one for Surfers Paradise after reports of a bomb threat at a car park.

Police set up an exclusion zone surrounding the Bruce Bishop car park and evacuated nearby hotels, bars and establishments.

Earlier, police said they had taken a man into custody over the Brisbane airport incident.

“The man has been transported to a (nearby) police station where he is to be interviewed,” the spokesperson said.

“There is no evidence to suggest the incident at the International Airport is terrorism related, it is a domestic violence related situation.

“Specialist police remain at the airport with clearance searches of the International Terminal on-going.”

According to Newscorp, the suspect walked into the airport carrying a metal box with exposed wiring.

Witness Nick Sherrard said it was a dramatic scene at the airport.

“Man took out a knife in departures just as we checked in,” he posted.

Other witnesses said the saw an “old man” pull a knife from a bag near the food court and try to stab his ex-wife in what appeared to be a domestic argument.

No members of the public were injured in the stand off.

“Police have made a declaration under the Public Safety and Preservation Act tonight at Brisbane Airport due an emergency situation,” a police spokesperson said.

“The Australian Federal Police are in attendance in conjunction with Queensland Police.”

Police have cordoned off the international airport, with officers closing the approach roads.

Passengers, cars and buses have filled nearby streets as the lock down continues despite the man being taken into custody.

A Brisbane Airport spokesperson said they hope to resume flights shortly.

“The Australian Federal Police is managing the security matter and we hope to get back to normal operations as soon as possible,” an airport spokesperson said.

More to come.
