Their recent split shocked fans around the world.

And as Lachlan Gillespie, 32, and Emma Watkins, 28, navigate their way through a painful separation, an insider claims he is struggling with their split as he was hoping to save their marriage.

'Things hadn't been right between Em and Lachy for a while but he really thought they could work through it,' an unnamed source told Who magazine on Thursday.

'Lachy is devastated.'

Daily Mail Australia has reached out to the pair for comment.

Lachlan and Emma announced their split last week, after two years of marriage.

'...We wanted to let you know that privately for the last six months we have been navigating through a trial separation, and we have made the decision to separate as a couple,' Lachlan wrote in a lengthy Instagram post.

Emma explained their heartbreaking decision in her own post, writing: 'We have chosen a different path to travel in our personal lives, but please know that we are stronger than ever.'

On Wednesday, the former couple awkwardly posed together for the first time since announcing their break-up while attending a business meeting at a Sydney university.

Last week, friends reportedly told Sunday Confidential that Lachlan is shattered over the end of his marriage.

'Lachy is absolutely heartbroken,' a source said.

'He was completely besotted by Emma and worshipped her and still does.

'He tried absolutely everything to make it work, but in the end, he couldn't. His heart has been broken.'

It comes after a video of the pair discussing their engagement in 2016 resurfaced in which Emma suggests her partner was less keen than she was to enter their relationship.

In the clip, from the Tea With Jules YouTube series, Emma reveals that she fell in love with Lachlan the first day she met him, however it took her beau longer.

'I have always loved Lachlan, since the very day I met you. It's taken Lachlan a long time,' she says.

Lachlan awkwardly chimes in: 'I liked you too, it's just…'

Emma then goes on to explain that working together on the road was tough and the pair 'dwindled' into their engagement.

'You become so close, and you work so closely together, that we already had such a good relationship before we dwindled into becoming engaged,' she said.

The couple had secretly dated for two years before finally going public with their romance in March 2015.

Just two months later, the elated pair became engaged, with Lachlan popping the question on Sydney Harbour.

The pair tied the knot in April 2016, in a lavish ceremony held at Hopewood House in the upmarket town of Bowral, outside of Sydney.
