Most extreme fake pregnancies from the woman who killed her dog
ARMED with a knife, Anita Parker butchered and disembowelled her husband's Chihuahua puppy, then got into bed and waited for him to return home.
When he did, the scene was like something from a horror film - Anita was sitting on their bed, surrounded by blood and body tissue and screaming about having a miscarriage.
Husband Johnny Parker listened in devastation as his 43-year-old wife told him that she'd lost their child, the little boy he'd seen in ultrasound scans and had been so looking forward to meet.
She claimed she'd flushed their son's foetus down the toilet.
But disturbingly, Johnny would later discover Anita hadn't lost a child at all - in fact, she'd never been pregnant and had used his beloved pet's mutilated body to stage the miscarriage.
The case is among a series of shocking and tragic scenarios where women have pretended to be pregnant - often leaving their loved ones upset and grieving for a baby who never was.
This week, singer Justin Bieber and his wife Hailey have been hit by a storm of criticism after posting a fake pregnancy announcement in an April Fool's Day hoax.
Many fans lashed out at the 'joke', deeming it 'shameful' and 'disrespectful' to the millions of women who go through miscarriage, stillbirth and infertility every year.
But just why do women fake pregnancy?
Here, Brit psychologist Graham Price explains the reasons why to Sun Online - which incredibly include getting time off work and pleasing a lover, as well as the desperate desire to have a child.
Woman who mutilated husband's pet Chihuahua
THE FAKER: Anita Parker killed and disembowelled husband Johnny's eight-month-old Chihuahua - then used the blood and body tissue to stage a graphic miscarriage.
The 43-year-old, from Alabama, US, faked being pregnant for seven months and even shared an ultrasound photo online, saying: "It's a boy!".
But her lies turned deadly when she butchered the innocent puppy, Dolly.
Parker rang 911 in May 2016 to report a pregnancy-related emergency.
First responders discovered her soaked in blood and raced her to hospital. But medics shockingly found that the woman had never been pregnant - and the blood belonged to the innocent puppy.
Parker, who told Johnny she'd flushed the foetus down the loo, dumped Dolly's chopped-up body in a dustbin, and her husband later found the corpse.
Parker, now estranged from Johnny, was charged with felony animal cruelty.
THE REASON: It is still not clear why Parker faked her pregnancy and killed Chihuahua Dolly, but Gary says she clearly has a cruel, uncaring side to her. He says: "A woman able to inflict such cruelty on her dog, for her own ends, is probably capable of other uncaring acts. Her husband might be wise to stay estranged."
Woman who pretended gangsters cut out her baby
THE FAKER: Colombian Antonela Milena Padilla pretended she was pregnant before staging her own abduction by gangsters on the day she was supposed to give birth.
She even went so far as to claim the gang had cut her unborn baby from her womb.
As incredible as it sounds, the 37-year-old is said to have used a cushion to fool her husband into believing she was expecting a baby in a bid to convince him not to leave her.
But Padilla's 'scam' spectacularly unravelled on the day her child was due to be delivered by C-section.
She claimed she had been heading to the local hospital when she was kidnapped by a gang in a red van who bundled her inside and drugged her.
After 'awaking' from her ordeal, she told her husband and other loved ones that the 'organ trafficking' gangsters had cut the child from her belly to sell its body parts.
But medical staff found no evidence of knife wounds consistent with a "back street caesarean", and a blood test showed the woman had never been pregnant.
THE REASON: Graham says: "The reason for this faked pregnancy is one of the most common .... to convince a partner, in this case her husband, not to leave her."
Woman who shot dead new mum and stole her baby
THE FAKER: Yesenia Sesmas tragically lost her own child before staging her pregnancy.
The 36-year-old, from Texas, US, pretended she was still expecting, even holding a baby shower for her upcoming arrival with her family and friends.
Then in November 2016, she drove to Wichita, Kansas, after finding out a former colleague, Laura Abarca, had given birth to a baby daughter.
She shot dead the new mum before kidnapping her six-day-old girl, Sophia Gonzales.
She took the child back to Texas, intending to raise her as her own.
Fortunately, Sophia was found safe less than two days later at Sesmas's Dallas home after the infant's horrified dad discovered her missing and Laura dead.
Sesmas was convicted of first-degree premeditated and intentional murder, kidnapping and interference with parental custody, and was locked up for 50 years.
THE REASON: Graham says: "In this case, the woman faked pregnancy following loss of her own child. If this was all, it would almost be understandable as a desperate act to replace her lost child.
"We don't know whether murdering her friend and stealing her baby was always part of her plan, or whether it was a subsequent response to the need to cover up.
"Either way it's an example of how emotional trauma can lead some people to extreme and terrible acts."
Mum-of-four who claimed her twins had died
THE FAKER: Leslie Wilfred tricked her loved ones into believing she was pregnant with twins, then faked the pair's deaths in childbirth, leaving her family grief-stricken.
In November 2008, Wilfred called her relatives from her local hospital in Georgia, US, and told them the twins she had been carrying for five months had been stillborn.
She described how the infants had taken one breath each before dying, Fox News reports.
The mum-of-four claimed they had been cremated and, days later, an emotional funeral was held. However, devastated loved ones would later find out the twins hadn't existed at all.
Wilfred was caught out when speaking about the babies during an interview with Child Protective Services about her stepson, leading officials to investigate the 'stillbirths'.
They found no record of the twins' deaths at the hospital.
Officer Bob Brettel, lead investigator in the case, said Wilfred's actions were the result of two medical conditions - Munchausen syndrome and Munchausen-by-proxy.
These conditions see sufferers make up illnesses for themselves or their kids in order to obtain sympathy from others.
Wilfred was later jailed for eight years.
THE REASON: Graham says: "This turned out to be a case of Munchausen Syndrome
"She inflicted her syndrome on her husband and children. So it's reasonable to conclude she faked her pregnancy for the same reasons."
Jeremy Kyle contestant who tried to trap ex
THE FAKER: Former Jeremy Kyle guest Lizzie confessed live on air that she lied about being pregnant to trap her ex.
The tearful woman left fans gobsmacked as she admitted to faking pregnancy to try to win back her former boyfriend, Kenny.
She had initially told Jeremy she was 24 weeks pregnant and wanted Kenny back.
However, Kenny said he wanted nothing to do with her, and told the host that she was lying about the baby and had even faked her scan.
As the exes argued and their families became involved, Lizzie stormed backstage.
There, Jeremy gently told her an expert had said her maternity notes "do not stack up" and asked her to tell the truth.
Lizzie initially stuck to her guns, but ended up breaking down and telling the host that she'd lost the baby two days before appearing on the show.
Kenny later asked his ex: "Why lie, and why get your mam to lie?"
He added: "There's women out there who can't have kids, so why do it?"
THE REASON: Graham says: "Another example of one of the most common reasons to fake a pregnancy .... to convince a partner, in this case her boyfriend, not to leave.
Woman who wanted to hurt former lover
THE FAKER: Angela Smith reportedly admitted to faking pregnancy to hurt her ex.
The woman, from Dunn, North Carolina, is said to have faked doctor's appointments and thrown a gender-reveal party as she pretended to be pregnant.
But her scam was revealed the day before she was meant to give birth.
After being questioned, she admitted to faking her pregnancy and said she did so to hurt her ex.
THE REASON: Graham says: "In this case the motivation appears to have been to hurt her ex.
"Revenge against someone leaving a relationship rarely brings satisfaction and is likely only to harm the person seeking revenge."
'Range of motives'
Graham tells Sun Online there are a range of other motives to faking a pregnancy.
These include "gaining time off work, pleasing, at least for a while, the man in a woman's life, convincing others to relieve pressure on ourselves at work or just desperately wanting a baby".
He says: "With the exception of trying to please others, all the more common motives are generally self-seeking, even if they are often driven by emotional needs. And since others are almost always hurt or disappointed, faking a pregnancy is generally a selfish, inconsiderate act."
