A Melbourne man who was reported missing by his wife when he went on a solo camping trip says he has a lot of explaining to do.

Experienced camper Bruce Ninnis set out on his solo trip on Monday, but failed to realise he didn’t have satellite reception.

When he didn’t get in contact with his wife Melinda, she reported him missing.

“He was very surprised, he was very embarrassed,” sergeant Robyn Reed said.

“He didn’t think that going away for a few days camping was going to cause such a stir.”

Mr Ninnis told 7 News he was sending text messages to his wife, but without reception, they failed to be delivered.

The Police airwing was called out along with local officers on the ground before they spotted Mr Ninnis’ car.

“He was probably a bit alarmed to see a police vehicle try to intercept him on a dirt road in the middle of nowhere,” Sgt Reed said.

“He’s vowed to buy a satellite phone so next time he can keep in touch.”

Mr Ninnis said he was now thinking of ways to make it up to his wife.

“I might have to,” he said. “My son’s already informed me that it’s going to cost me a lot of money.”
