Mexico Captures Alleged Piracy Chief For Zetas Cartel
Villanueva Salas, also known as "The Piracy Czar", was arrested after a military operation in the northern city of Monterrey on Monday (June 11).
Authorities accuse the alleged Zetas chief of producing and distributing pirated discs in the central and northern states of Zacatecas, San Luis Potosi, Nuevo Leon and Coahuila. The suspect is also thought to have attacked schools, media and military headquarters in the drug-ravaged state of Tamaulipas.
"Soldiers executed a precision operation in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon and were able to catch Gregorio Villanueva Salas, also known as "The Piracy Czar". He was identified as one suspect allegedly responsible for grenade attacks against schools, media facilities, business and military installations located at Matamoros, Tamaulipas," army spokesperson Ricardo Trevilla told media.
Authorities said the suspect confessed to receiving attack orders from Zetas supreme commander Heriberto Lazcano and using profits from the cartel's piracy wing to help fund its operations.
"He (Villanueva Salas) mentioned the profits made from the piracy activities he controlled, (which) were delivered personally to Heriberto Lazcano, also known as "El Lazca", so from this arrest the flow of resources of this criminal organisations has been reduced," added Trevilla.
The Zetas is one of the most brutal cartels in the Americas with an estimated 10,000 members across the region and spurring a dramatic turf war with rival drug gangs that has seen violence spiral.
Embattled Mexican President Felipe Calderon launched his army-led war on drug cartels in late 2006 on taking office, but now faces growing public alarm at the some 55,000 dead in the conflict across the country since then.
