A WORKER at Manchester Airport has been rushed to hospital after the plane-towing vehicle he was driving ploughed into a catering truck.

Horrified eyewitnesses told how the stricken driver was left "trapped" in the crushed tug after breaking both legs in the "horrific" collision.

The tug - used to tow aircraft to and from the runway - is thought to have smashed into a catering truck near Terminal 1.

The driver was reportedly cut out of his cab and rushed to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Several fire engines and an air ambulance were scrambled to the scene as passengers watched on in shock.

The driver is thought to work for airport contractor Aviator.

An airport worker told the Manchester Evening News: "A tug drove past us and smashed into an Alpha food truck. He ended up hitting the corner full on. The tug’s cab ended up underneath the Alpha’s cab.

"The man driving the tug was trapped with one leg badly injured. I’m pretty sure he will have lost it.

"The air ambulance came and fire trucks along with police. They had to cut him out. Later we found out he broke both legs."

A Manchester Airport spokesman added: "We are aware of an accident on the airfield involving an Aviator employee. He has been taken to hospital and an investigation will now take place."
