A MAN was shot by police after attacking a patrol with a knife today, according to reports in Denmark.

The assailant was said to be in a critical condition after the shooting in Aarhus – as Republic of Ireland football fans gathered in the city ahead of tonight’s Nations League match.

Few details have been released and it is not yet known if cops are treating it as a terror attack.

The man is said to have lunged at officers near a bus stop in the Brabrand suburb.

A huge emergency response swung into action after the alleged attack just after 1pm in Karen Blixen’s Boulevard.

East Jutland Police said on Twitter: “We remain massively present in the area while we investigate.”

Aarhus, a port in East Jutland with a large student population, is Denmark’s second largest city.

Denmark plays Ireland in the Nations League football tournament tonight at the Ceres Park stadium in Aarhus.

The venue is a ten minute drive from the scene of the shooting in Brabrand.

On Sunday an Ireland fan was found dead in Copenhagen where he was staying before travelling to the match.
