A man who allegedly used a mobility scooter to tow a motorboat down a busy motorway has been charged by police.

Shane Swancott, 35, has been charged after allegedly towing his 17-foot boat down the Pacific Highway in Belmont, 20 kilometres southwest of Newcastle, Nine News reports.

Footage of the alleged incident went viral on Facebook.

He was allegedly using the scooter as a mode of transport during the October 19 incident after his driving licence had been disqualified.

Swancott has been charged with driving while disqualified, using an unregistered vehicle and trailer on a public road and use an uninsured vehicle on a public road, Nine reports.

He was served a Future Court Attendance Notice to appear at Belmont Local Court on January 9 next year
