A DISABLED man who used his mobility scooter as a "battering ram" to knock over two elderly women on the pavement has today been jailed for two years.

Aaron Ali, 40, reversed over Doris Collins, 88, and Joan Benjafield, 90, while they were out shopping in Welling, Kent.

Ali denied the claims against him but was convicted of two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm after a two day trial at Southwark Crown Court.

The court had previously heard how the two pensioners were waiting at a bus stop for the number 96 bus on June 14 this year when they were run over by Ali.

The prosecution described how Ali used the chair as a "battering ram" against the two elderly ladies, reversing back over them.

Sentencing him, Ms Recorder Emma Goodall told Ali: "You are assessed as having a high likelihood of reoffending and of being a danger to the public.

"This was disgraceful conduct that could have had serious and long lasting consequences.

"It is nothing short of remarkable that those two ladies were not more seriously injured."

The prosecution have since applied to confiscate Ali's £12,000 wheelchair, claiming it is a weapon.

Roger Daniells-Smith, defending, told the court: "The inmates at Wandsworth prison have been playing with it. They have been mucking about with it and it has been damaged."

But recorder Ms Goodall refused to make an order to confiscate the wheelchair as Ali will depend on it upon release from prison.

It comes after prosecutor James Dean told how Ali used his chair "as a battering ram" against the two elderly ladies.

He said: "He is seen to reverse.

"He hits the old lady nearest the curb [Ms Benjafield].

"She hits the ground. [Mr Ali] stops and goes forward a short distance.

"Believe it or not he reverses again."

CCTV footage played in court shows him ride pass the two women then suddenly stop before reversing into Ms Benjafield, sending her flying onto the pavement.

The two women were knocked over when the ramp came down and Ali rode off on his scooter.

Ms Collins suffered some cuts to her knee while Ms Benjafield was left with bruises to her calf and ribs.

Ali was also accused of punching 72-year-old Michael Gibson in another random attack in nearby Woolwich High Street on January 2 but was cleared of that charge.

Ali, who qualified as a nurse in 2001, claimed he was left disabled for life after he was attacked by a patient while working at Shaftesbury House, Ealing.

He was jailed for 22 months for assaulting the two old ladies and given two months consecutive for harassment. Ali also received one month concurrent for destroying an officer's laptop during a police interview on June 18 in Plumstead police station.
