A TRAM has derailed in Sheffield after being hit by a lorry in a "major incident" today.

Cops are currently at the scene with passengers being warned of delays.

The tram involved is a new "Supertram", which was launched just hours before the smash.

South Yorkshire Police said "We are currently dealing with a collision between a tram and a lorry on Staniforth Road Sheffield.

"Road closures are in place.

"At this time no-one is thought to be seriously injured.

"Please avoid the area and plan alternative routes."

The Supertram completed its first journey between Sheffield and Rotherham earlier today, the Sheffield Star reports.

Streets Ahead tweeted: "We have been advised a lorry has hit a tram at Staniforth Road/Woodbourn Road and the tram has derailed.

"@SCSupertram aware, and a team is en route to place out road closure signs. Please take care in this area."
