STRONG winds and rain lashed Darwin on Thursday afternoon as a severe thunderstorm warning was issued for the area for the first time this Wet season.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Moses Raico said more rain was expected to fall across the Top End in the coming days.

“The chances of showers are similar if not greater than (Thursday) — storms peak on Friday and start to gradually fall off over the weekend,” he said.

“(On Thursday) we had some storms just form in the rural area and they looked pretty good on radar imagery and we ended up issuing a severe thunderstorm warning.”

The majority of the rain fell over the Palmerston region with Pinelands receiving 27mm and Palmerston receiving 19mm, while the strongest winds were recorded at Stokes Hill Wharf where they were clocked at 85km/h.

But Darwin Airport recorded just 6mm in its gauge.
