JEAN-CLAUDE Juncker mocked Theresa May as he danced on stage in an echo of her party conference speech.

The top Eurocrat did a jig to his entrance music as he started a speech in Brussels on Monday.

The audience at the Committee of the Regions meeting laughed as they recognised the dig at Britain's PM.

It came after Mrs May began her conference speech by bopping along to ABBA's Dancing Queen.

Mr Juncker took a further swipe at Britain by telling his audience that he preferred to make his speech in French or Luxembourgish, his native tongue rather than English.

The European Commission president added: "In Europe, there is an increasing number of eurosceptics and they tend to be promoting sceptical opinions.

"But I think we need to talk to them. I would like to distinguish between those eurosceptics who have questions to ask and opinions to make and those stupid populists. It's not the same thing.

"We need to distinguish between those stupid populists and the nationalists who have an opinion to put forward."

Mr Juncker's mockery of Mrs May is the latest in a string of public digs at the UK from senior European leaders.

Donald Tusk caused outrage when he used Instagram to warn the PM against "cherry-picking" the EU single market.

Asked whether Mr Juncker meant to undermine Mrs May, spokesman Margaritis Schinas responded with an Abba lyric, saying: "Without a song or a dance what would our life be?

"Not directed at anyone, improvisation on the moment as the music kept playing before he could start his speech. Great respect for Theresa May repeatedly stated in public and demonstrated in practice."
