TAKE a look inside a couple's mould-ridden council house that's so damp - MUSHROOMS grow on the walls.

The Kings Norton, Birmingham property is covered in blotchy black mould stains and filled with a musty stench of fungus.

Mushrooms have started to grow from the tiles in the shower of the damp-ridden abode.

Mark Kent and Mary Whitmore, both 20, have lived in the "nightmare" home for three years and are now battling a number of health conditions.

Mark has endured conjunctivitis five times because the mould spores drip from the ceilings and get into his eyes.

Mary, who has been signed off of work because of her worsening health, said: "It's a nightmare, it has changed my life.

"My dad has asthma and when he has come round he has had to go outside because he's coughing his guts up at the smell."

The pair first complained to Birmingham City Council last December, and conditions at the property have continued to get worse.

For a year, the couple said they dragged their moist mattress from the bedroom into the living room nightly - because the ceilings were dripping onto them as they slept.

They've had to throw away wardrobes full of clothing as they mould even crept its way into their storage - staining their clothes.

A full weekly food shop is impossible for the pair, instead they claim they have to shop every two days to stop mould setting in.

Food becomes infested with fungus within 48 hours, rotting goods that are fully packaged from the outside in.

Birmingham City confirmed they are aware of the problems and are working with the couple.

A Birmingham City spokesperson said: “Our housing team is aware of issues raised by the tenant, through a notice of disrepair received in December 2017, and we have been actively working with the family.

"However as these are subject to active legal proceedings, we are unable to comment further.”
