Insane demand for limited edition Converse sneakers designed by Off-White
IT’S the shoe that nearly broke the internet and now, Australians are finally getting their hands on them.
Demand for the second Off-White x Converse collaboration has reached insane levels, with more than 22,000 Aussies signing up to a ballot for the chance to buy a pair of the sought-after shoes.
It is Converse’s biggest-ever release, with only a fraction of those who entered the raffle actually given the chance to buy the $A180 sneakers.
Reports have suggested that about 3 per cent of those who entered the Australian ballot were able to buy the shoes.
The Off-White x Converse Chuck 70 sold-out “immediately” after the ballot closed on Monday.
The limited edition Converse Chuck Taylor 70 was designed by fashion superstar Virgil Abloh, of upscale streetwear brand Off-White (he is also the creative director of Louis Vuitton).
Abloh’s design for Converse is sold at a fraction of the cost of Off-White trainers, which are typically priced at more than $A600.
Abloh’s take on the classic Cons includes a bright orange sole and Off-White’s distinctive black-and-white stripes, with the word “shoelaces” printed on the laces.
Demand for the for the Off-White x Converse shoe is the latest “it” shoe to almost break the internet, following the current trend of chunky, dad-style sneakers.
Brands including adidas reported a spike in sales of the so-called “ugly” shoe trend.
Adidas’ Falcon runners sold out in less than a day on a string of top Australian online stores.
It came after social media star Kylie Jenner, 21, had been promoting the ’90s-inspired adidas Falcon as part of her seven-figure endorsement deal with adidas.
The all-white version of the Falcon, priced at $150, sold out on Australian sites including The Iconic and Stylerunner within 24 hours of launching earlier this month.
Californian brand Skechers has recorded a 25 per cent increase in sales of its sports range since the “dad’ sneaker trend started this year, a spokeswoman said.
Based in Manhattan Beach, Skechers’ top-selling “dad” shoe is the $A120 Skechers D’lites, featured in seven runway shows during New York fashion week.
Fila and Puma also have popular versions of thick-soled runners.
The trend follows the sought-after Balenciaga Triple S low-top trainers, as seen on Bella Hadid, and priced around $A1245.
