SHOPPERS are furious after Iceland's website crashed overnight, leaving customers unable to order or change Christmas food deliveries.

Customers were still unable to shop on the website this morning, and some are still having problems despite Iceland saying it has fixed the outage.

Iceland said on its Twitter page that the website experienced "a few hiccups" because so many people were trying to place their Christmas food orders.

The extra traffic crashed the website, it added.

Customers said they were being placed in a virtual queue mid-way through their online order and unable to finish their shopping.

This morning, shoppers couldn't access the website at all, with a message saying that the website was undergoing "essential maintenance".

Iceland said the problems have been fixed, but a few on Twitter say that the website keeps logging them out of their accounts.

Customers were furious that the website crashed so close to Christmas.

Frustrated shoppers said they had problems placing food orders, logging into their online accounts and changing their existing orders.

One wrote on Twitter: "Seriously Iceland, can you not scale your website to demands, spending twenty minutes getting logged out and put in queues is making me just want to shop elsewhere."

Another said: "Been trying to order food for 3 days all it says is I’m in a queue."

David Devany, Managing Director of Online at Iceland said: “We have been experiencing higher than normal volumes of website traffic and we are aware that some customers experienced delays in accessing the site yesterday evening and this morning.

"The issues were intermittent and have now been resolved.

“We announced earlier in the week that we are the only supermarket with delivery slots available up to 23rd December, and have seen a huge uptake in customers visiting the site to book their slots.

"We have added extra capacity and released more slots to meet demand."

Iceland has more than 800 shops across the UK. You can find your nearest branch using its store finder tool.

Meanwhile shoppers have been left furious after hackers targeted Iceland Christmas bonus accounts.

If you want to make Christmas go a little further this year, Iceland is selling a dinner for six for £22.
