Human rights activists from Walk Free counted 40 million slaves in the world
MOSCOW, July 22 - RIA Novosti. The non-profit human rights organization Walk Free presented updated Global Slavery Index rating, which estimates the number of people subjected to various forms of slavery.
When compiling the Global Slavery Index, the organization used data on 167 countries and more than 71,000 respondents. The rating falls on those who suffer from various forms of forced and child labor, forced marriage, trafficking in persons for the sale of organs. This number includes prisoners working in the place of serving their sentences, since in fact they work involuntarily.
According to Walk Free, there are 40.3 million people around the world who are subject to slavery. And 71% of them are women.
The leader of the rating was North Korea, where 2.64 million people are engaged in forced labor, to which they are forced by the state. The top-10 rankings also included Eritrea, Burundi, CAR, Afghanistan, Mauritania, South Sudan, Pakistan, Cambodia and Iran.
According to Walk Free, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, the USA, Sweden, Belgium, Croatia, Spain, Norway, Portugal and Montenegro pay the greatest attention to the fight against modern slavery.
Russia took 64th place in the Global Slavery Index.
Global Slavery Index has repeatedly been criticized because of lack of reliability. Experts expressed doubts about the counting methods used by the organization. In addition, according to experts, the compilers of the rating lack a clear understanding of the term "modern slavery", and its wording varies from year to year.
