TWO huge container ships have collided at one of South Asia’s largest and busiest ports, sending more than 50 shipping containers to the bottom of the ocean.

The incident was captured on video by a local port worker, with the video quickly gaining traction on social media.

It happened at Pakistan’s Karachi Port on Monday when an 8,000-container cargo ship collided with an anchored cargo ship carrying 6,350 containers. It quickly went from bad to worse as shipping containers began tumbling into the water, reportedly losing millions of rupees worth of cargo.

“Approximately 55-60 containers from the ships fell into the sea,” port authorities told The Frontier Post.

Two berths were also damaged in the accident, but no one was hurt.

The Karachi Port Trust has ordered an investigation into the crash, which resulted in the halting of container transport for several hours, Pakistani newspaper The News International reported.

An operation to pull the containers out of the sea was underway with the help of Pakistan Navy, with the operation likely to take two to three days to be completed.
