Factory image of Android 8.0 Oreo for Nexus Android TV player is available on Google's Developer website. Google had released the images and security patch for Pixel and Nexus devices in September but didn't mention about any update on the Nexus Android TV unit.

The security update for the Nexus Android TV player had a version number OPR6.170623.021 as mentioned by a report on DroidLife. The Factory images posted on the Google Developer website also warn that 'installing the factory image will erase all the data from the device'.
The blog mentions that the backed up data might be restored but data associated with apps will be uninstalled. So, the users installing the updates should back up the data.

The installation follows a process which might be difficult for some users. Those who aren't sure about the process must wait for the over the air update of the device.

Android 8.0 Oreo features improved user interface with customisable notification. It also brings picture in picture mode for watching videos.
The Android 8.0 Oreo also comes with improved security update and connectivity options. Wi-Fi Aware is an energy-efficient way that helps in chatting with another device without the use of any Wi-Fi hotspot or internet connection. It also supports Bluetooth Low-Energy (BLE) 5.0.
