First there was the horrifying Prosecco spill that devastated drinkers around the world, now there’s been chocolate carnage that could have ruined Christmas.

A street in a west German town got a repaving worthy of fictional candy maker Willy Wonka when a tonne of chocolate flowed out of a the local factory covering an entire road.

According to German newspaper, Soester Anzeiger, a “small technical defect” involving a storage tank caused the sweet and sticky substance to spill from the DreiMeister chocolate factory in the town of Westoennen, in Werl.

After hitting the chilly pavement, the milk chocolate quickly hardened creating a street chocoholics would love.

But the decadent boulevard was short-lived with the emergency services called in to fix the road.

Around 25 firefighters spent hours trying to pry the chocolate coating off with shovels and hot water and even used torches to remove the remaining bits from cracks and holes.

DreiMeister chocolate factory boss Markus Luckey told the Anzeiger the factory would be back in action on Wednesday.

Mr Luckey said if the spill had happened closer to Christmas, it “would have been a catastrophe.”

We agree.
