Russia extremely negatively assessed the words of US President Donald Trump, who said he gave Europe the "last chance" to correct the deal with Iran before the US withdraws from it. This was stated by Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, reports RIA Novosti.
"Yesterday's decisions and statements made in Washington are very negative, our worst expectations are justified," he said. According to Ryabkov, the United States took "a course for scrapping" an agreement on a nuclear deal with Iran. He noted that the extension of the suspension of sanctions by the US is nothing more than "cosmetics." "The main thing is that not only the pressure, but the ultimatum component is growing stronger in the US approach to Iranian affairs," the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister said.
On Saturday, January 13, Trump said that the United States would for a time refuse to apply sanctions against Iran, that European countries agreed to "rectify the terrible shortcomings" of the nuclear deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran. The American president said that he gives Europe the "last chance". "And if I see that such an agreement is not possible, I will immediately withdraw from the deal," the American leader said.
On Friday, January 12, Trump extended the suspension of sanctions against Iran in accordance with the agreement on the Tehran nuclear program, which was signed in 2015. The suspension mode will last for four months.
At the talks in Brussels on Thursday, January 11, the foreign ministers of the three countries and the representative of the European Union called on the US to maintain the nuclear agreement. The politicians present at the talks said that Iran has the right to take advantage of suspension of sanctions, because this is stipulated by the agreement.
German Foreign Minister Zigmar Gabriel said that the deal must be retained, because North Korea wants to get nuclear weapons. British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said that the Iranian agreement on the nuclear program has made the world safer. The head of European diplomacy, Federica Mogherini, expressed her confidence that the deal with Iran fulfills its main function, namely, it keeps the Iranian program of this Islamic republic under international control.
