A Florida man who claimed his 21-year-old girlfriend committed suicide was arrested on suspicion of murder, officials said.

Charges were filed against Dontonieo Sapp-Denson, 24, for allegedly shooting Tynikkia Tanner inside a Jacksonville apartment and staging her death to look like a suicide, news station WJAX reported.

Sapp-Denson was arrested around 5 a.m. Thursday and charged with second-degree murder and evidence tampering.

Police said they responded to the residence in October after receiving a call about gunfire.

Sapp-Denson reportedly answered the door and told officers that the mother of his child shot herself in the head.

Officials pronounced the young woman dead at the scene and determined her death was a homicide. According to authorities, evidence collected during the investigation pointed to her boyfriend.

A GoFundMe page created to raise money for Tanner’s family said she was a mom to three kids.
