Flipboard co-founder Evan Doll leaves to become an EIR at Redpoint Ventures

Flipboard has announced that cofounder Evan Doll has “decided not to return” to the company after a long sabbatical. Instead, he will become an Entrepreneur in Residence at Redpoint Ventures. Chief executive Mike McCue says that Troy Brant, Flipboard’s head of client engineering, will take over Doll’s responsibilities.

A company spokesperson told VentureBeat that Doll’s departure wasn’t a surprise — the team had known about it for some time. As part of a succession plan, Brant had been working closely with McCue to ensure an orderly transition. That obviously begins today.

Doll had been with McCue since the beginning in 2009, when they gathered together to toss around ideas that would eventually become the publishing platform known as Flipboard. As part of his responsibilities at the company, Doll had overseen development of the iOS engineering team, design, strategy, hiring, and culture. Now, five years later, it’s time for the organization to change.
