A former assistant principal in South Carolina who apologized to the mother of a 19-year-old student for their “inappropriate relationship” — but confessed to being in love with the teen — has pleaded guilty to second-degree harassment.

Dawn Proffitt Diimmler, 44, pleaded guilty in Richland County on Dec. 21 to the lesser charge, but still faces a charge of sexual battery with a student in Lexington County, The State reports.

A judge sentenced Diimmler — who was fired in February from Airport High School in West Columbia — to 30 days in jail or a $200 fine. Attempts to reach her attorney were unsuccessful, according to the newspaper.

Police in Cayce said the married mother of three had sex with the teen twice at school during their three months of encounters between March and June of last year. She was also accused of having sex with the teen at a hotel in Columbia.

Diimmler later confessed to district officials, admitting that she had an inappropriate relationship with the 19-year-old student and that she apologized to his mother in a voicemail, according to documents obtained by The State via an open-records request.

The district’s superintendent later cited the “inappropriate relationship,” as well as Diimmler’s untruthfulness about the allegations and her efforts to reach out to the teen’s mother, in her termination letter.

“I have listened to those recordings, in which you admit to [the student’s mother] that you are in love with her son, and in which you apologize to [her] for your inappropriate relationship with him,” Superintendent William James Jr. wrote.

Diimmler, whose attorney had previously cited her “glowing performance reviews” at the school, had worked for the district since 2012, ColaDaily.com reports.

School employees in the Palmetto State are barred from having sexual relationships with students regardless of their age. If convicted of sexual battery with a student in Lexington County, she faces up to five years in prison.
