A MAN shot dead in Northampton last Thursday night has been named by police as 28-year-old Joshua Baines.

The dad-of-two was found lying in a pool of blood in Upton at around 9pm and was pronounced dead at the scene, just yards from a children’s playground.

A post-mortem examination found he died as a result of injuries consistent with being shot with a firearm.

Several people have been arrested, but the police say there are still more people they need to talk to.

In a statement issued through the police, his family said: "Joshua was a truly beautiful person in every way and his death has left a huge gap in our lives. He was caring and thoughtful towards his family and a loyal friend.

"He was a fantastic son, brother, partner and father to two wonderful children.”

Detectives are now studying the possibility that the murder was part of a gangland turf war and that Baines was caught up in criminal activities.

Northamptonshire Police believe the killer was known to the victim.

Chief Supt Chris Hillery from Northamptonshire Police said "Upton is usually a very safe place. It is a low crime area and a safe place to live and work.

"We believe neither the victim nor the suspects are linked to this location.

"We are following several significant lines of inquiry. This is a fast moving investigation" he added.

One woman who asked not to be named said she heard “loud bangs” just after 9pm on Thursday.

She said: “It was a really distinct sound.

"It was quite shocking. There are a lot of children around.

"What drives someone to do something like this in a place like this?

"I'm just grateful my children were tucked up in bed.”

Chief Supt Chris Hillery added "Anyone with concerns in the local area is asked to contact their local neighbourhood officers who will be able to help."
