The Council of the European Union has decided to extend for another six months the term of sanctions, which provide for the freezing of assets of a number of companies and individuals, whom the EU authorities accuse of involvement in the violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.

The report, published on the website of the Council of the EU, states that the sanctions were extended until September 15, 2018. Official documents on this will be published in the EU Journal on Tuesday March 13, 2018.

"The assessment of the situation does not justify making changes to the sanctions regime," the Council of Europe said in a statement.

Thus, 150 Russian citizens and representatives of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics, as well as 38 public organizations and companies operating in either the People's Republic of China and the People's Republic of Germany or the Crimea, which the EU authorities consider part of Ukraine, will remain under sanctions.

Sanctions against individuals and legal entities accused of violating the sovereignty of Ukraine, the EU authorities first introduced in 2014. Since then, the validity of sanctions has been repeatedly extended, and the list of those who have been sanctioned has been expanded several times. Among the individuals under the sanctions are the Federation Council head Valentina Matvienko, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin, head of the Foreign Intelligence Service Sergei Naryshkin and many other politicians and statesmen. According to the sanctions legislation they are prohibited from entering the territory of the EU.
