Main roads in London are blockaded by a heaving red and white army this morning, after England knocked Sweden out of the FIFA World Cup and booked a place in the semi-final.

Fans have spilled out of pubs, parks and homes, coming together to celebrate their team's victory, after more than five decades of disappointment.

The country hasn’t won a World Cup since 1966, so most people who gathered to watch the match today have been waiting their entire lives to see England reclaim the Cup.

"It is just amazing, the vibe here is absolutely incredible," one anxious fan told 9NEWS inside a packed Clapham pub.

Harry Macguire opened the scoring for England, thrilling fans. A jittery first half followed, with England coming close several times.

In the second half England goal keeper Jordan Pickford saved the day with stunning defense. Then Dele Alli sealed the deal with a second goal.

Five minutes of extra time was no help to Sweden, and as the full time siren sounded on 2-0, the streets of London rang out with the chant "football's coming home".

9NEWS was there as fans blockaded a major junction, climbing on the bonnet of a Rolls Royce, surrounding London’s iconic red buses, even climbing up lamp posts.

If this is how the Brits celebrate winning a quarter final, just imagine the scene in four days from now when the team takes on Croatia in the semi-final.
