EIGHT guests at a Brit wedding in Italy have been struck down with a mystery illness after claims they were poisoned by biscuits.

Paramedics rushed to the event in the resort of Brenzone near romantic Verona on the shores of Lake Garda at 2am this morning.

Italian media reported that the wedding was held at a private property in Malcesine on the eastern shore of Lake Gard before guests moved to Brenzone for the reception.

Italian police are said to be exploring various theories regarding the poisoning, the MailOnline reports - including one theory that guests may have fallen ill from homemade biscuit bought to the wedding by one of the guests.

Four ambulances and local police attended amid fears that drinks had been spiked or food was contaminated.

It is not clear if the "poisoning" panic - reported in Italian media - is a case of food poisoning or something more sinister.

The guests were rushed to two separate hospitals where their conditions were described as "medium to severe".

One ill Brit reportedly refused hospital treatment.
