TASS, February 17. An earthquake of magnitude 7.2 occurred on Friday in the state of Oaxaca in southern Mexico. This was reported by the US Geological Survey (USGS).

Originally, the USGS reported an earthquake of magnitude 7.5, but then corrected the data.

After the first, most powerful, shock, seismologists recorded at least 59 aftershocks, the National Seismic Service reported on its Twitter page. The magnitude of the strongest of them was 5.9.

According to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC), the tsunami threat is not expected after the earthquake.

As stated by Twitter, the national coordinator of the civil defense of the Mexican Ministry of Internal Affairs Luis Felipe Puente, reports of destruction in the affected states of Oaxaca, Chiapas, Michoacan, Puebla and the metropolitan district of Mexico City were not received.

"The government of Mexico did not report any damage to the infrastructure of the states where the earthquake was felt," Puente wrote. Communication and transport in the country are working as usual, the head of the profile department of Gerardo Ruiz Esparza said.

According to the National Seismic Service of Mexico, ground tremors were recorded 11 km from the city of Pinotepa-Nacional, their hearth lay at a depth of 12 km. After the earthquake in the country's capital, an alarm system worked, citizens left the high-rise buildings in an organized manner.
