Euroa residents remain without telephone and internet services after earthworks damaged a cable that connects the town to the Telstra network.

A spokesman for the telco says 1,300 phone lines, 1,700 ADSL internet connections and mobile services were cut yesterday morning when earthmoving equipment damaged a fibre optic cable at Sunbury about 9:30am (AEST).

Senior Sergeant Ralph Willingham from Seymour police says the landlines at the Euroa police station and the Euroa Hospital are affected.

"Benalla police station is an alternative if police need to be contacted, the Euroa Hospital has been able to have their landline diverted to their mobiles and we're confident Telstra will be able to do that for other affected clients as well," he said.

He says, where possible, people should check on elderly residents.

"We have a vulnerable persons register which police actively monitor but there are many others that may require their neighbours or friends or relatives just to check up on them, even just a quit knock on the door and how are you going, particularly with the cold snap that we're having," he said.

Telstra says it is working to reconnect services in the area as soon as possible.
