The damage to the banking sector of the Russian Federation from cybercriminals in 2017 exceeded 1.3 billion rubles

At the same time, there was a decrease in the amount of thefts from bank accounts of Russians

MAGNITOGORSK, February 16. / TASS /. The damage to Russian banks and payment systems from the actions of cybercriminals in 2017 amounted to 1.35 billion rubles, according to the data of the survey of unauthorized cash transfers for 2017 prepared by the Center for Monitoring and Responding to Computer Attacks in the Credit and Financial Sphere (FICCERT) of the Bank of Russia.

"1.35 billion rubles was the volume of unauthorized operations (attempted theft of funds - comment TASS) as a result of incidents that occurred during the operation of reporting information infrastructure objects," the report said.

In 2017, attackers eight times attacked the processing centers of banks and payment operators. They increased credit limits on their existing bank cards, in order to cash out funds for a total of about 950 million rubles. One of the banks informed the Central Bank about a successful attack on the SWIFT operator's workplace. As a result, the bank withdrew 339.5 million rubles. Some of these funds were returned.

Two more banks reported to the Central Bank about unauthorized operations that the attackers committed from their correspondent accounts with the Bank of Russia, for the amount of 54 million rubles. In 2016, the damage from this kind of incidents exceeded 700 million rubles, the decrease in FincERT is explained, among other things, by the fact that the banks complied with its recommendations for protecting its infrastructure.

Six banks recorded cases when cashiers transferred funds to bank accounts of malefactors as a result of the so-called social engineering - motivating a person to commit the actions necessary by intruders by deception or abuse of trust. The volume of unauthorized operations amounted to 7 million rubles.

At the same time, there was a decrease in the amount of thefts from bank accounts of Russians. Along with this, in the past year there was a slight increase in the number of unauthorized transactions on individuals' accounts, the survey says.
"The volume of all unauthorized transactions made using payment cards issued in the territory of the Russian Federation in 2017 amounted to 961.3 million rubles, which is 10.6% less than the same indicator for 2016," the authors of the survey indicate.

Most of all from the actions of hackers in 2017 suffered residents and companies of the Moscow region. "Moscow and the Moscow region are the leaders in the number of unauthorized operations." In Moscow in 2017, almost 86,000 thefts amounted to 325.5 million rubles, in the Moscow region - 9.3 thousand thefts in the amount of 29.3 million rubles " , the report says.

According to FinCert, the anti-rating leader is Moscow: here live up to a third of citizens and almost half of the companies that suffered in 2017 from the actions of hackers. The second place in terms of the number and amount of thefts is occupied by the Central Federal District - in 2017, 28.5 thousand unauthorized transactions were made here to the amount of 56.4 billion rubles. In the third place - Privolzhsky federal district with 18.8 thousand operations for the amount of 40 million rubles.

As previously reported deputy head of the Central Directorate of Security and Information Protection, CB Artem Sychev, the regulator is watching the negative dynamics of the amount of theft. If in 2015 this indicator was almost 5 billion rubles (3.8 billion rubles from legal accounts and 1.15 billion rubles from individuals' accounts), in 2016 it is already 3 billion rubles (1.9 billion rubles and 1, 08 billion rubles, respectively).
