A court in Kenya has ordered former Sports Minister Minister Hassan Wario and the country’s first Olympic gold medalist Kipchoge Keino to surrender to police over the alleged embezzlement of $550,000 (£410,000), which was meant for the use of the nation’s team to the Rio Olympics in 2016.

Mr Wario, who is now Kenya’s ambassador to Austria, and Mr Keino have until Thursday to surrender. Their whereabouts are unclear.

Three other senior sports officials were charged with abuse of office.

A statement by Kenya’s Director of Public Prosecutions, Noordin Haji, cites inflated air tickets, overpaid allowances and embezzlement as some of the offences that may have been committed two years ago.

Kenyan athletes in Rio complained of deplorable living conditions in their camp, insufficient training kit and the presence of relatives and friends of officials who had no business being at the Olympics at government expense.

While Kenya still won six gold medals, some say their athletes would have performed much better if they had the full financial banking of sports officials.
