It's the final edition of the German classic.

The latest and last Volkswagen Beetle is taking centre stage at this year's LA Auto Show.

Of course, it’s nothing like the original Beetle - the last of the world’s most successful rear-engined car rolled off the production line in 2003, after 65 years.

But the name was kept alive with the ‘New Beetle’ between 1997 and 2010, before the current version went into production from 2011.

Since 1998, about 500,000 Beetles have been sold globally but in recent years sales have declined, particularly in the US.

The last new Beetle sold in Australia was back in 2016 before imports ceased.

In September, Volkswagen announced that the Beetle will cease production in July 2019.

Could the Beetle one day be revived again?

It’s unlikely, according to Mark Gillies, the product communications manager at Volkswagen US.

“At the moment there are no plans to do a new-age Beetle,” Mark Gillies said.

“But we’re never going to say never.”
