High-tech researchers at a Chinese agency have been warned against travel to the US following the arrest of a tech executive in Canada.

The staff were also warned via an internal memo to clear their mobile phones and laptops of sensitive information should they have to travel to the US, the South China Morning Post has reported.

Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer and deputy chair of China's tech giant Huawei, was arrested in Vancouver on 1 December.

She was granted bail earlier this week by a Canadian court and could be extradited to the US to face fraud charges linked to the alleged violation of sanctions on Iran.

The move has angered China. However, amid suggestions the arrest was a political kidnapping related to the ongoing trade war between Washington and Beijing, US President Donald Trump has most recently said he may intervene in the case.
