A viral dance craze is sparking controversy after a US man was hit by an oncoming car while performing the daring act in the street.

The dance, known as 'In My Feelings’ challenge is performed to a song from US rapper Drake's new album, Scorpion, released last month.

The dance challenge often has people jumping out of cars, sometimes while the car is still moving, to dance to the song.

Originating on a popular hip-hop show the dance has swept across the web since, with videos of the dance often attracting millions of views and attempts by celebrities including Will Smith, Ryan Seacrest and NFL superstar Odell Beckham Jr.

However, authorities are now warning against the dangers of the craze after one attempt saw a man collected by an oncoming car he had planned to jump on top of during the dance.

Jaylen Norwood from Florida was filmed exiting the driver's side door of the car and performing the dance on the street.

Norwood gets eight seconds into the song before the car approaches and he attempts to jump onto the moving car, slipping on some oil and hitting his head on the car's bumper.

"I planned this whole thing out. I was gonna do the dance and then jump on the hood of the car and continue the dance but it came too fast and I slipped on the oil and that's why I got hit by the car," Norwood said.

The video then cuts to a clip of his showing his cuts.

"I wasn't injured. It just scraped my arm."

Norwood escaped the incident with cuts and bruises but authorities are warning people to stop performing the challenge on the road.

"Hopping out of a moving vehicle or jumping into lanes of traffic to show your dance moves is foolish and dangerous — to you and those around you,” a representative of the US' National Transportation Safety Board said.

“There’s a time and place for everything, but our nation’s highways and roadways are no place for the #inmyfeelings challenge.”
