BORIS JOHNSON is demanding Theresa May prove she has the "guts" for Brexit - by ripping up her Chequers plan and negotiating a new trade deal with the EU.

In a staggering eve of party conference blast, the ex-Foreign Secretary said the current backstop arrangement over Ireland should be axed.

And he calls on No.10 to pursue a "SuperCanada" free trade deal with Brussels to "fulfil the instruction" of the Brexit vote in the 2016 Referendum.

He admits there will be certain "hostility" from Labour and Tory backbenchers to the idea of a trade deal that puts Britain outside the single market and customs union. And pro-EU sources last night insisted there was nothing new in his plans bar a "basic rebranding" of his ideas.

But in a 4,600 word tirade, the Tory says: "There has been a collective failure of the Government and a collapse of will by the British establishment to deliver on the mandate of the people."

Writing in the Daily Telegraph he adds: "We must decide who we are. We must decide whether we have the guts ... to leave the EU and truly take back control of our own laws and our lives."

Under the ex-Vote Leave champion's 6-point plan:

Boris calls for the PM to chuck her "humiliating" Chequers Brexit plan which would tie the UK to EU rules for goods.
Rip up the backstop arrangement which gives "Brussels the perpetual right to the economic annexation" of Northern Ireland if rules diverge.
Use the two year post-Brexit transition phase to thrash out a trade deal based on the one struck between Canada and Brussels.
Launch practical preparations to operate our own trade and immigration policy and to leave the Customs Union.
Accelerate No Deal preparations in case of a breakdown in the talks.
Demonstrate the UK is energised by the idea of leaving the EU by beginning talks on Free Trade deals with the rest of the world from April 2019.

The blast sets the tone for one of the most explosive Tory conferences in years.

Sources yesterday claimed more Cabinet Ministers are coming round to the idea of backing a Canada-style free trade deal.

EU leaders lined up to trash the Chequers proposal in a humiliating summit at Salzburg last week.

The Sun earlier this month revealed Downing Street is drawing up secret plans to dump Chequers and "pivot" away from the softer Brexit plan to avoid disaster.

Last night, Mr Johnson said: "This is the moment to change the course of the negotiations and do justice to the ambition and potential of Brexit.

"We have the chance to get it right, and I am afraid that future generations will not lightly forgive us it we fail."
