Just keep in mind something else... I don't think they hacked the BTC exchange site and then also hacked thousands of emails to do their "job". Makes no sense!
Thinking about it, there wasn't a big scandal at the time so clearly not everybody's wallet had been emptied. They didn't disable the email confirmation option as that's how I found out about the transfers. One confirmation for a transfer of one coin and then a minute later, another confirmation for the transfer of the rest. I stupidly hadn't set up two step verification with the mobile as I didn't know much about that at the time and just assumed the email confirmation would have been enough. Anyway, I've put it behind me (and improved my security) and only remember how much the coins cost me rather than what they were worth when I lost them. I've just looked at the exchange rate now and seen that 267 coins will buy me a very decent house these days but back then, they would have bought me a fairly decent second hand car so not that bad.

I use https://bitbargain.co.uk/. It's via UK bank transfer - the spread on spot price is a few % and there were some hoops to jump through to initially get registered but now I can generally get coins in my wallet in ~30 mins.

Ok, use Localbitcoins (worldwide). Find a seller with a good reputation. Try buy with a small sum, if it feels safe go for a higher sum. LB is pretty safe and the sellers rep speaks for itself. The traders there can't afford scamming people since it will hurt their profile.

Coinbase is fairly simple to use. Just register an account, save your card details and buy with debit/credit card.

Use Kraken in Europe. It has lower fees than Coinbase.

You can buy through coinmama as well, works well.

Then you have the exchanges where you can deposit usd and exchange for btc. Good exchanges are: Poloniex, Bittrex, Bitfinex, Gdax, Kraken, Cex, Shapeshift and Changely. Shapeshift and Changely are integrated into Coinomi, a multiwallet you can use to trade within the wallet. For Asian users, Binance is recommended, Binance is a really good exchange.

Ok good luck and a good advice is:
Be a BIT patient. Your transaction will succeed

I actually think ethereum is pretty neat for payment because it has zero fees and lightning speed. But that's just my experience

    All the best

NOTHING has zero fee. Electrum is a software wallet and you can install it on your PC. You can store your BTC on electrum instead of storing those on a company's wallet (coinbase, coinmama etc).

If you know how to set the right fee each moment, you can definitely safe a few USD from the fee by using electrum, because all these companies always add a huge fee (the customer pays the fee and they don't really care since they just want fast confirmations).

Electrum is good yeah. I like mycelium too and use Coinomi for convenience (it's a multiwallet). Yup, keep your coins in a wallet. Trade on exchanges

If anyone is looking for a service in Sweden, I would highly recommend https://bt.cx.
They offer direct payment with the most used mobile pay system in Sweden (Swish).
1/3 of every swedish citizen frequently use it on their cell phones.

For numerous security reasons, they do not posses any wallets on their website anymore.
However, they do provide an own developed Wallet "BTCX | Wallet" for Android.
They recommend Breadwallet for iPhone which I myself use, quite nice UI & UX.

The process of purchasing is both fast and easy (3 minutes), you're given multiple options with different costs depending on the speed you want for the transaction. They currently have Bitcoin and Ethereum available.
One of the great services they provide is their customer support, if your payment is stuck or something has went wrong they'll troubleshoot the issue and respond really fast.

With my overall use I've never encountered any negative experience.

I originally used coinbase, but then they cleared out my bank account like 4 times. They blamed visa, and visa blamed them. I am using uphold now and have never had a problem, although it takes 24 hours for my deposit to clear, which is annoying, but considering I don't day trade, and am just HODL, it works for me.
